What changedJapan’s first $10 billion instalment will support a 300mm fabrication plant at GlobalFoundries’ Malta, New York, site, described as shovel-ready and slated to open in 2029. A further $10 billion is planned for a second fab, adding a clearer sequence to the previously reported two-plant investment.
GlobalFoundries has also amended its US CHIPS and Science Act award, reallocating $995 million towards silicon photonics, silicon-germanium and advanced packaging. That expands the deal beyond new fabrication capacity into several technologies used in semiconductor manufacturing and packaging.
The details come from Data Center Dynamics’ report on the US-Japan initiative. The timetable gives the first facility a public target, though it is not a guarantee that the plant will open on schedule.
