What changedIndia Today reports that the controversy following OpenAI’s September announcement about its models solving the Navier–Stokes problem has raised concerns among researchers about AI’s role in mathematical discovery, how AI-generated proofs should be verified, and the possible use of researchers’ data.
At Stanford, Sam Altman said he did not expect AI to cause a widespread jobs apocalypse. He argued that mathematics had experienced the disruption faster than other fields, offering an early glimpse of how professions might adapt to more capable AI systems, according to India Today.
That adds a sharper practical question to the debate: mathematicians may have to assess AI-generated results as well as produce mathematics themselves. Verification is rather less glamorous than a breakthrough headline, but it is where the argument has to cash out.
