What changedUnit 42 says AI-assisted research helped the attacker map one university’s online education services and identify a working login. The researchers did not say that this account access led to the theft of more than 5,200 records; that database was taken in a separate intrusion.
The researchers also found a credential-scanning toolkit intended to search for exposed secrets, such as cloud keys in files or logs. Their account describes planning and research into phone-service fraud, but says they found no call records or evidence that the planned operation was carried out.
For organisations, the practical lesson is less exotic than the AI angle: restrict administrator and database access, require multi-factor authentication where possible, and keep credentials out of public files and logs.
