What changedCBS News reports that Microsoft expects to spend $175 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026, citing CFO Amy Hood’s July earnings-call remarks. That figure gives the workforce retooling context a much larger price tag, though it does not show that AI directly replaces any of the roles covered by the voluntary offer.
The report also says Microsoft planned a separate buyout offer for about 8,750 US employees in May. In July, the company announced 4,800 job cuts, including many in its Xbox business. Those are distinct workforce actions, not departures counted against the current offer.
For the latest programme, CBS says employees in some units, including data-centre and sales and marketing roles, are ineligible. The reported 60,000 is the approximate number who may qualify, not a forecast of how many will leave.
