What changedThe Decoder adds that ChatGPT does not fetch licensed partners’ pages live. Instead, it receives pre-generated summaries, while ordinary web pages arrive as raw text snippets; partner entries are also placed ahead of web results in the prompt.
In an analysis of 1,000 cases, Konitzny found that partner summaries named 70 per cent of entries in positions one to three in ranked lists, compared with 23 per cent of entries in positions seven to ten. That gives the reported placement advantage a useful measure, though it does not by itself establish why those entries ranked where they did.
The Decoder also points to a Hamburg study that found Springer media appearing far more often in ChatGPT’s web interface than through its API. It notes that partner content is not always cited correctly either.
Sources and evidence- OpenAI's partner content arrives in ChatGPT pre-summarized while the rest of the web gets raw scraps – The Decoder: The Decoder reports that ChatGPT receives pre-generated summaries of licensed partners’ content, places partner entries ahead of ordinary web results in the prompt, and that Konitzny’s analysis found partner summaries named 70 per cent of entries ranked first to third versus 23 per cent ranked seventh to tenth across 1,000 cases.
