Update

What changed

The Register reports that SK hynix sees future memory demand rising further as autonomous cars and robotics grow. The company also links AI-driven productivity gains and new revenue in areas such as software development, customer service and search to greater AI adoption and infrastructure spending.

SK hynix says it is working to expand production but cannot add capacity fast enough to meet demand. Its chief financial officer, as quoted by The Register, expects shipments of PCs and mobile devices to fall because rising memory prices and shortages are increasing costs for those markets.

The company’s plans include increasing HBM4 production, which it expects to overtake HBM3E in shipments and revenue in the fourth quarter.

Sources and evidence
  • SK Hynix says memory shortages to persist until 2030: SK hynix sees additional memory demand from autonomous cars and robotics, says capacity expansion cannot meet demand quickly enough, expects rising memory costs and shortages to reduce PC and mobile shipments, and outlines plans to expand HBM4 and other AI-oriented memory products.
