What changedCoxon has now sharpened his argument in a Fox News interview. He said the danger of an AI takeover from present systems is “minimal”, while claiming recursive self-improvement could begin as soon as next year. He noted that some people put the timeline at six months. Those are Coxon’s forecasts, not demonstrated timelines.
His proposed response is less apocalyptic than the headline might suggest: regulation, international coordination and enough breathing room for safety work. Coxon called the problem “eminently solvable” and said AI could deliver tremendous discoveries, but argued that laboratories are moving too quickly.
That distinction is useful. Coxon is not claiming today’s models are about to seize the steering wheel; he is warning that a future capability jump could arrive before governments and laboratories agree on the brakes. Fox News said it contacted Anthropic for comment but reported no response.
