Update

What changed

Coxon’s call for an AI slowdown is no longer a lone resignation warning. Safety staff at both OpenAI and Anthropic have now publicly echoed the concern, turning one researcher’s exit into a wider argument inside the labs building frontier models.

CNBC reports that OpenAI technical staff member Julie Steele said in a personal capacity that development should slow. OpenAI alignment researcher Jasmine Wang and Anthropic safety researcher Anna Wang separately warned that there is no viable scientific plan for managing the risks they associate with recursively self-improving AI.

These are attributed expert judgements, not evidence that such systems are imminent or that catastrophe is inevitable. Still, the practical question has sharpened considerably: if lab insiders want a slower pace, what measurable capability or failed safety test would actually trigger one? Anthropic pointed to its catastrophic-risk framework and safeguards; OpenAI declined to comment to CNBC.
