What changed

Apple CFO Kevan Parekh said it is too early to know how many AI requests will need servers rather than on-device processing. CEO John Ternus said some server-based features, including Siri AI and intelligent photo editing, will have usage limits, with expanded access available for purchase in future.

The infrastructure contrast is striking: Apple spent $2.2 billion on capital expenditure last quarter, against Amazon’s $77.3 billion and Alphabet’s $51.4 billion. Those are company-wide totals, not AI-only spending, and they exclude some AI costs.

There are already examples of local AI use on Apple hardware. The Verge says Gap runs AI on Mac Mini computers for loss prevention across hundreds of stores, while Christie’s uses Mac Studio computers for work including pricing estimates.

Sources and evidence
  • Apple is all in on AI — its own and everyone else’s – The Verge: Apple is pursuing AI revenue through device upgrades, local AI hardware, services and future paid expanded access, while its reported capital expenditure remains far below Amazon’s and Alphabet’s. The Verge reports the earnings-call statements and examples; the spending figures are company-wide, not AI-only.
