Update

What changed

New figures cited by CNBC put numbers on the growth of businesses that show no early signs of hiring. In industries highly exposed to AI, quarterly applications for these businesses rose 26.8% between the first quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2026, from about 222,000 to 281,000.

One example of the potential scale is Alex Willen, who told CNBC he expects his 12 employee-free e-commerce brands to bring in $2.5 million to $3 million this year. He uses Claude for tasks including bookkeeping, customer service, advertising and inventory, and OpenAI image tools for work once sent to photographers and designers.

The pattern is not simply “AI means fewer staff”, either.

The businesses may be small, but they still lean on large platforms: Willen said roughly 80% of his overall revenue comes through Amazon.
