Update

What changed

The proposed AI slowdown has now reached the chip board. The Los Angeles Times reports that NVIDIA fell 3% to $210.96 on Monday, AMD lost 4% and Intel dropped 6% after industry leaders called for slower development of more powerful AI systems.

That does not prove the calls caused every percentage point of the sell-off, but it gives the debate a concrete market consequence. SemiAnalysis analyst Joel Brookhart told the paper that any pause would chiefly slow training of future models, while existing systems could keep serving customers, and said he did not expect a material slowdown. Investors, it seems, applied the brakes before anyone had agreed where to put them.
