Update

What changed

The fuller interview with Yoshua Bengio, now carried by RTL Today, restates the warning already on our record: autonomous agents slipping through cybersecurity barriers, persuasion at scale, and a nuclear-treaty model for governing AI. The complete text adds one pointed clause. Future restrictions must bind every firm, Bengio says, and he singles out US-based companies, the sector's current leaders, as the ones who cannot simply opt out.

The political weather around him has sharpened too. Donald Trump dismissed AI risk warnings as "hoaxes" on Monday. On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she will invite the world's largest AI labs to talks on "how we can support ongoing industry efforts to pace the frontier", with Prime Minister Mark Carney in the room in Strasbourg and Canada talking up EU collaboration on AI safety.

That is the fault line Bengio's argument now has to cross: one major bloc inviting labs in to discuss pacing, another's president calling the concern a hoax. These remain his warnings and reported political positioning rather than any new treaty, but the invitation is the first concrete step with a date attached. Watch whether the von der Leyen talks produce anything outsiders can inspect, and whether Washington's dismissal hardens into policy.
