Update

What changed

The fundraising wave around thought-controlled technology now has numbers attached. PitchBook figures reported by the Financial Times put investment in brain-computer interface companies at more than $1bn in 2026 already, against $1.56bn across the previous four years combined. A single calendar year has banked roughly two-thirds of what the four before it managed in total, with the final quarter still unspent.

Turn the totals into pace and the step change sharpens. The previous four years worked out at roughly $390m a year for the entire field; 2026 has cleared that annual average more than twice over before October begins. Categories rarely cross that kind of threshold by drifting.

Two boundaries keep the figure honest. PitchBook's tally measures money raised, not devices cleared, patients served or revenue earned, so it gauges investor conviction rather than clinical progress. What it does settle is scale: the acceleration is now a measured total rather than a directional impression, and the open question is whether the hardware can convert conviction into working products quickly enough to earn it back.
