What changed

The doubling call now carries Huang's own sentence. 'I expect Nvidia to sell twice as many chips as this next year as we do this year,' he told the media before a summit with King Charles III in Scotland, per CNBC's Thursday report. What arrived earlier as a relayed expectation is now a direct quote with a speaker, a place and a timestamp.

The numbers behind it are the real addition. CNBC frames the doubling as the latest in a run of Nvidia forecasts pointing to massive growth for the next six quarters, and it lands shortly after the company revealed it expected 70% growth in the fiscal year ending in January 2028, or about $673 billion, a figure that sent analyst expectations shooting up.

Then there is the small print hiding in the word 'chips'. Nvidia does not disclose how many it sells in total. Its best-known products are data centre GPUs such as Blackwell and Rubin, and last autumn Huang said 6 million Blackwell GPUs had shipped in four quarters. But the same tally would also take in central processors, switch chips, optical networking parts, laptop chips, Jetson silicon for robots and cars, and the processor inside Nintendo's Switch 2. Doubling that mixed bag is not the same claim as doubling AI accelerator supply, and the forecast leaves the mix unspecified.

The same trip produced a safety line worth keeping.
