What changedOpenAI has confirmed that Sam Altman will brief the United Nations Security Council next week, during the annual gathering of world leaders for the UN General Assembly. The earlier exclusive now has the company's signature under it, and the announcement names the convenor: France, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the 15-member council, per TRT World's Friday report.
The choreography is the point. On Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for coordinated international action on AI risks. "National action is essential. But global coordination is also indispensable," he told reporters. France putting AI on the council's agenda the same week is that coordination acquiring a date, a chamber and a witness list.
The backdrop is an industry arguing with itself in public. Dario Amodei has urged a slowdown, writing that "we must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models", with Altman, Elon Musk and Demis Hassabis lending support, while President Trump has dismissed the warnings as a "hoax". Anthropic, meanwhile, has said it found examples where its systems could have been used towards biological weapons development, which met some scepticism.
Altman now gets to make the pacing case in the room where international rules begin.
