What changedMark Zuckerberg has sharpened Meta’s argument against a coordinated slowdown in AI development, telling Reuters that competition and the threat of significant liability should give individual labs enough reason to build safely.
Zuckerberg said every lab has the responsibility, incentive and ability to act at the pace required to train its models safely. He pointed to Meta delaying the release of its Muse AI agent to strengthen security, and said the company directs the significant majority of its compute towards products serving users rather than self-improving AI systems.
He also said Meta’s Superintelligence Labs already uses independent evaluators in several areas, describing that as industry best practice. The Reuters account places those claims in a widening split: Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has called for slower progress on recursive self-improvement, while OpenAI’s Sam Altman and xAI’s Elon Musk backed his call. Zuckerberg’s position is that safety incentives can work company by company. The awkward question is whether liability arrives before, or after, the damage it is meant to deter.
Sources and evidence- Meta's Zuckerberg says AI labs have enough incentive to build safely – Reuters: Reuters reports that Mark Zuckerberg says competition and potential liability give AI labs sufficient incentive to develop safely without a coordinated slowdown, and that Meta delayed Muse for security work, uses independent evaluators and directs most compute towards user-facing products rather than self-improving AI.
