What changed

The DeepMind Institute has added more detail to its opening research programme, including an economic-policy study that tests 11 interventions using literature reviews, surveys and 51 AI agent raters modelled on economist data.

The work does not produce a single answer to the economic effects of advanced AI. Instead, it links different policies to different scenarios. Universal Basic Capital scored 76.3 out of 100 for agency in the economist-panel analysis, but only 33.1 for feasibility. The essay’s survey found support of 85% for publicly funded retraining, 72% for unemployment insurance and 54% for Universal Basic Capital.

That makes the institute’s brief more concrete than a general call to debate AGI. Its opening work now spans safety, reasoning transparency, economic policy, global access, science, education and human flourishing, while still stressing that contributors may disagree and revise their views. The numbers describe the institute’s research, not a forecast of what governments will adopt, but they give readers something more useful than another foggy prediction about the future: competing policy choices with visible trade-offs.
