Update

What changed

Mark Zuckerberg has sharpened Meta’s opposition to calls for a collective slowdown in AI development, arguing that trust and alignment will become competitive advantages for model makers. The new emphasis is less “carry on regardless” than “move quickly, but make safety part of the product”.

In remarks reported by HuffPost, Zuckerberg said AI labs have both a responsibility and an incentive to prevent their models causing harm. He argued that companies failing to focus on alignment will fall behind, while describing the debate over slowing capability progress as an argument for using the time gained wisely, not necessarily for stopping development.

The comments put Meta’s position more directly against Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei’s call to pace frontier progress so safety work can catch up. Zuckerberg pointed to Meta’s decision to postpone its Muse AI agent release for security work, but the evidence establishes a company position and example, not proof that commercial incentives alone are enough to police increasingly capable systems. The awkward question for every lab is now rather concrete: who gets to decide when its incentives are working?
