What changedArmenia’s proposed AI infrastructure push is considerably more concrete than an attractive map pin. Bloomberg reports that Firebird has begun operating a data centre in Hrazdan, with plans to reach 300 megawatts and more than 70,000 Nvidia chips by the end of next year.
The facility is expected to reserve a fifth of its computing power for Armenian researchers, government and start-ups, with the rest available to foreign firms including Perplexity AI. Firebird says the site would become the largest computing cluster in the region and one of Europe’s largest, although those ambitions remain company claims rather than independently established rankings.
The bigger development is the link between hardware access and diplomacy. Bloomberg reports that Nvidia export permissions formed part of US negotiations around a proposed Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement and a wider semiconductor and AI partnership. Firebird says its centre has already started operating, but the treaty has not yet been signed. The result is a striking early example of AI infrastructure being treated as both an economic project and a tool of foreign policy. Servers, it turns out, now have a seat at the negotiating table.
