What changedAWS says its open-source Strands Harness can run locally or in the cloud, while its context-management approach cuts operating costs by 45% compared with Claude Code and Codex. The framework also offers a command-line interface for prototyping and exporting agents as Python or TypeScript code, giving developers a route from experiment to something they can actually keep.
The cost figure is AWS’s claim, reported by TechGig, rather than an independent benchmark. The new practical detail is the deployment choice: developers are not limited to an AWS-hosted setup, and can select from different model providers while using the same agent framework.
That makes Strands Harness less of a cloud-only upsell and more of a piece of agent plumbing. The useful test is whether its context management produces similar savings on ordinary workloads, where token use, model choice and tool calls have a habit of ruining a beautiful spreadsheet.
Sources and evidence- AWS open-sources Strands Harness for cheaper AI agent development – TechGig: AWS has open-sourced Strands Harness as a general-purpose AI-agent framework for local or cloud deployment and claims it is 45% cheaper to operate than Claude Code and Codex through context management.
