What changedQualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 add more detail to the company’s local-AI push, including sensing hubs that can run models of up to 200 million parameters. The chips are designed to handle features such as a local personal scribe, speaker differentiation and usage-based memory without sending every task to the cloud.
Qualcomm says the Extreme version can also run a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model locally, while both processors support a complete voice-in, voice-out agent. The new chips are intended to improve personalisation for AI agents, although the supplied reporting does not provide independent performance, battery-life or latency testing.
The practical shift is from headline capability to possible phone behaviour: devices may be able to remember preferences, separate speakers and automate tasks on-device. Motorola has announced a Signature 27 phone using the Extreme chip, with general availability expected later this year. Qualcomm’s announcement, reported by TechCrunch, still leaves the useful questions unanswered: how well these features work in ordinary use, and how much battery they consume.
