Update
What changedAMD’s open-source Linux graphics driver now recognises GDDR7 memory, adding a more concrete detail to the early signs of its next Radeon generation.
The patch, submitted to the AMDGPU mailing list, introduces GDDR7 alongside existing entries for GDDR6, HBM3E and HBM4. KitGuru reports that it arrived with further hardware-enablement work, including revisions of AMD’s IH 8.0 interrupt-handler and NBIF 7.10 bus-interface blocks.
That still does not confirm an RDNA 5 launch date, specifications or performance. It does show AMD preparing its driver stack for hardware beyond the current RX 9000 series, which uses GDDR6. Recent reporting has linked RDNA 5 with possible launches in 2027 and a broader line-up in 2028, but those timings remain unconfirmed.
Sources and evidence- AMD adds GDDR7 memory support to open-source Linux graphics driver – KitGuru: KitGuru reports that AMD’s upstream open-source Linux graphics driver has added initial recognition for GDDR7 memory, alongside further AMDGPU hardware-enablement patches. This is evidence of driver preparation for future Radeon hardware, not confirmation of RDNA 5 specifications or release timing.
