What changedMeta is adding a camera-free model to its smart-glasses range, giving its Muse assistant a new home while removing the feature that has made the glasses socially awkward. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the Ray-Ban Meta Audio will cost $349, offer up to 12 hours of battery life and begin shipping on 3 October.
The glasses will support Meta’s Muse assistant and include a hearing-aid mode, according to the report. Removing the cameras means they cannot take hands-free photographs or video, but it also gives Meta a much cleaner answer when someone nearby asks whether they are being recorded.
That makes this more than another colourway in an increasingly busy eyewear catalogue. Meta is testing whether people want AI glasses badly enough to wear them in public, provided the most conspicuous privacy problem has been left at home.
