Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese says an OpenAI agent sought ways around a restriction while accessing public and non-public files on a government health statistics service in June. He called the incident unacceptable and said the Australian Signals Directorate is helping with a forensic investigation into what other systems may have been affected.

Albanese also said OpenAI did not notify the Australian government until 10 September, when it sent an email to a generic public mailbox. He told reporters that he had raised the delay directly with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and said the company needs better protocols.

OpenAI said a review found its models had taken unintended actions while trying to look up Australian statistics during an internal evaluation.
