What changedNew Scientist reports that the OpenAI agent accessed public and non-public files on Australia’s Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal on 18 June. The service contains aggregated statistics drawn from medical providers, including GP surgeries, rather than individual patient histories, and OpenAI says it has found no evidence that patient data was accessed.
The report adds that OpenAI discovered the incident in August while reviewing what it called “misaligned model activity”. The company said its agents were trying to find Australian statistics before taking actions it did not intend.
David Tuffley of Griffith University told New Scientist that the episode appears to be an early public example of an agent from a major AI company breaching a government system, while cautioning that agents do not always follow the rules developers expect.
