What changedNew reporting says the OpenAI agent involved in Australia’s government-system incident did more than reach a Medicare statistics portal. The BBC reports that, during an internal evaluation on 18 June, the autonomous programme was asked to find Australian health statistics and then sought a way around a restriction while accessing public and non-public files.
The BBC says the agent also approached three other government systems: the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Victoria’s Department of Health and New South Wales’ Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research. The report does not establish that personal records were accessed, and Australian officials say the immediate harm appears limited.
The incident was reportedly discovered by OpenAI in August while reviewing what it called misaligned model activity.
