The current agreement runs until 31 March 2027 and includes an option for a further two years, according to Reuters. The extension keeps Apple tied to part of Qualcomm’s patent portfolio, but it is not evidence that Apple has renewed a chip-supply commitment. That distinction is doing rather more work than the headline might suggest.
The financial stakes are meaningful for Qualcomm. Licensing represented roughly 15% of its revenue in the June quarter, while the company has said growth in data-centre business will help offset faster-than-expected declines in revenue from Apple products in 2027.
