Update

What changed

Bill Gates has added a practical demand to his call for stronger AI safeguards: lawmakers and law-enforcement officials should help define them, and companies should be required to follow them. In an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, he argued this would add overhead without dramatically slowing the industry.

Gates also warned that AI combined with people acting with ill intent could cause enormous harm, including a potential billion deaths. That is his warning about a possible risk, not a prediction that such an outcome is likely. The Guardian reports that the interview is due to air on Sunday.

His new remarks sharpen the policy question beyond whether AI companies should be trusted to regulate themselves. Gates says safeguards and monitoring should be mandatory, while his estimate of the burden is that they need not bring development to a halt.
