What changedSam Altman says OpenAI could consider going public after it has run “a few safety cases” and better understands how to handle the next level of AI. He gave no IPO timetable and said he did not want to pursue one while AI development and safety remain in flux.
In a CNBC interview, Altman described the recently withheld model as “a little bit worse” on several of OpenAI’s evaluations, saying there was no “big scary thing” behind the decision. He characterised holding back or reworking models that miss the company’s standards as part of its normal development process.
Altman also argued that AI safety is not solely an engineering problem: researchers still have to discover how to align models.
