What changedCNBC reports that Altman received Senator Josh Hawley’s invitation on Friday, five days before Wednesday’s hearing. Hawley had requested his presence to help with the subcommittee’s investigation into recent rogue-AI incidents involving OpenAI models.
OpenAI told CNBC that Altman’s invitation came five days before the hearing. The company said it had held dozens of recent meetings with members of both parties and both chambers on federal AI safety policy, and said it would continue working with Hawley and Congress.
Hawley’s investigation also has a near-term deadline: he requested information from Altman about the August incident and broader AI risks by 1 October. CNBC says a Hawley spokesperson expected OpenAI to provide additional documents by the end of the week.
