Meta has unveiled $1,299 VR glasses and a handheld Muse Charm designed to let people speak to its AI agent without unlocking a phone or opening an app. The bigger story is the attempted merger of immersive hardware and an assistant that can act on a user’s behalf.

Watch Desk analysis

What happened

Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg revealed both devices during the company’s Connect developer event, according to CNBC. The Muse Charm is planned for the December holiday season, although Meta has not announced a price and says it is still finalising the hardware.

The $1,299 Meta VR Glasses are due in spring 2027. CNBC describes them as slimmer and lighter than Meta’s Quest headsets, with an external puck containing the Qualcomm processor and battery. The glasses use eye and hand tracking, and are intended to provide higher-resolution visuals while retaining awareness of the surrounding world.

The Charm is the more revealing move for Muse. Zuckerberg said users will be able to talk to the device and show things to their Meta AI agents without first reaching for a phone. That turns Muse from an app you open into something Meta wants close at hand, like a very enthusiastic assistant who has been issued a tiny walkie-talkie.

Why it matters

Meta is not merely selling another headset. It is building several ways to summon an AI agent across glasses, phones and a dedicated object. The practical appeal is obvious: fewer menus between a person and a task, and a faster route to giving Muse information about the world around them.

The trade-off is equally clear. A wearable or handheld device that can see, hear and relay information to an AI agent raises immediate questions about permissions, bystanders, cloud processing and how much control users retain. The supplied report does not establish how the Charm will handle those questions, what it can do beyond voice interaction or whether it will work independently of a phone.

Our read

The Charm is the more important announcement, even though the glasses carry the larger price tag. Meta is testing whether an AI agent becomes more useful when it is always nearby, rather than waiting patiently inside an app.

That is a sensible hardware bet, but not yet a finished product story. Until Meta explains the Charm’s capabilities, connectivity, privacy controls and cost, this is a persuasive doorway with no floor plan.

What to watch

  • Charm pricing and availability
Meta says it is targeting December, but has not given a price or firm shipping detail.
  • What the Charm can actually do
Voice access is confirmed in the account; broader capabilities remain unclear.
  • Privacy and permissions
Watch for how Meta handles microphones, cameras, bystanders and data sent to Muse.
  • The glasses’ real-world experience
The external puck, eye tracking and hand tracking will matter as much as the headline resolution claim.

Discussion spark: Would you trust a dedicated AI gadget that can see and hear around you, or should assistants remain behind a screen until their permissions are easier to understand?

Update

What changed

Meta is adding hands-free cycling and public-transport directions, calendar integration, mirrored phone notifications and Dolby Atmos audio capture to its Ray-Ban Display glasses. The company is also bringing a photorealistic “Hologram” feature to WhatsApp video calls and expanding availability to the UK, Canada, France, Italy and Germany.

The hardware push is widening too. Meta says its $1,299 VR glasses will arrive in spring 2027 with a 5K display and an external compute puck, while third-generation Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses will start at $449.

Meta also unveiled Muse Charm, a keychain-sized device with a small screen showing the Muse avatar Jolly.

The practical shift is that Muse is being distributed across glasses, a dedicated pocket device and computers, rather than confined to a chat window.

Sources and evidence
  • New Features for Meta Ray-Ban Display: Meta announced a broader AI-wearable and Muse rollout, including new Ray-Ban Display features, expansion into five additional markets, $1,299 VR glasses due in spring 2027, audio-only glasses from $349, third-generation AI glasses from $449 and a Muse Charm device planned for December.
