Alibaba has unveiled a new generation of Qwen smart glasses in Hangzhou, with prices starting at 2,999 yuan (about $450). The glasses put the company’s Qwen assistant, shopping and payments into a wearable device, making this a more ambitious bet than a pair of spectacles that merely takes photos.

What happened

The new Qwen Glasses N1 line includes 50-megapixel cameras and bone-conduction microphones for talking to the AI assistant. Alibaba says the glasses offer up to 25 hours of standby time or nine hours of music playback on one charge.

A Pro model, priced at 3,499 yuan, adds eye-tracking functions. Alibaba has also begun selling Qwen Clip AI earbuds, developed with Bose and priced at 1,299 yuan. Bloomberg reported the announcement through Yahoo Finance.

Why it matters

Alibaba is trying to make its AI assistant useful beyond a phone or chatbot, bundling it with cameras, voice interaction and everyday transactions. Shopping and payments could give the glasses a practical job; they also make the quality of the AI experience, and the way it handles personal information, part of the product rather than a footnote.

The price puts the standard glasses in premium territory, so the question is whether Qwen’s features feel compelling enough to justify a dedicated wearable. Alibaba is competing in a category where the hardware must be comfortable and useful before the assistant gets its moment in the spotlight.

Our read

This is a substantial consumer-AI launch, not just another gadget with an assistant bolted on. The interesting move is the combination of AI with shopping and payments. Whether that makes the glasses genuinely handy or simply gives users one more screen-free way to browse a shop remains to be seen.

What to watch

  • Which Qwen functions are available at launch, and where.
  • Whether Alibaba publishes details on privacy controls for camera, voice and payment features.
  • How the glasses’ battery life holds up during real use, rather than standby.

Discussion spark: Would you trust AI glasses to handle shopping and payments, or should those jobs stay on a device you can see and control more easily?
