Amazon QuickSight has added a hierarchy filter that lets dashboard readers explore related categories through one compact control, rather than juggling separate filters. Authors can build hierarchies of up to five levels, guiding readers from broad categories to specific items.

What happened
AWS says the filter can use related parent-child dimensions, not just geography. An author might set a path from Region to Country to City, or from Product Category to Product. Readers can drill into the hierarchy, and can select values at different levels together, such as a whole country and one city elsewhere.
To set one up, authors add a filter, choose “Hierarchy filter”, add and order up to five dimension fields from broadest to most detailed, then add the control to the sheet and publish the dashboard. The AWS walkthrough includes a worked retail-sales example. AWS says the feature is available in QuickSight; the post does not specify a rollout date or regional availability.
Why it matters
A long row of filters can make a dashboard feel like a cockpit designed by someone who was paid by the dropdown. A hierarchy keeps the starting view short, reveals relevant child values as readers drill down, and encodes relationships that readers might not know in advance.
There are practical limits. The filter supports dimension fields, not measures such as sales totals. Its top-level search only searches the highest level, while lower levels get their own search boxes when they contain more than ten unique values. If a level has over 1,000 unique values, it shows a search box instead of listing them.
Our read
This is a useful, specific improvement for dashboard authors working with data that naturally has parent-child relationships. It should make exploration clearer without changing the underlying data, but it is not a universal replacement for ordinary filters. If readers need to search across every level at once, the hierarchy’s search behaviour deserves a close look before you redesign the dashboard around it.
What to watch
- Whether the hierarchy control works well with real-world, irregular category structures.
- How readers handle the separate search boxes for lower levels.
- Whether AWS expands the five-level limit or changes search across the hierarchy.
Discussion spark: Would you replace several independent dashboard filters with one guided hierarchy, even when that means readers cannot search every level from a single box?
