AMD has begun sampling a new space-grade Versal AI Core chip for satellite and other long-duration missions, Techaeris reports. The XQRVC1902 is designed for missions lasting up to 15 years, with flight-qualified units expected in the second half of 2027.

What happened

The chip comes in a lidless organic package intended to improve heat dissipation. Techaeris says it is pin-compatible with existing VC1902 devices, which could let teams prototype designs on terrestrial hardware before adapting them for flight.

The report says AMD is testing the device against MIL-PRF-38535 Class Y requirements. That qualification is still in progress, not a completed certification. Sampling is under way with early-access customers; no price was given.

Why it matters

Space hardware has to keep working where repair is not an option. A design that can be prototyped on compatible hardware, then adapted for a long-duration mission, could make it easier for teams to bring programmable computing and vector-based processing into satellite payloads.

Our read

This is a tangible step towards putting adaptive computing on longer-lived space missions, but sampling is an early milestone. The qualification result and eventual flight availability will matter more than the mission-duration target on its own.

What to watch

  • Whether AMD completes Class Y qualification and when.
  • Whether early-access customers move from evaluation to flight programmes.
  • Whether the expected second-half 2027 availability holds. The useful change is who has to alter a product, a budget or a public line if the account holds.

Discussion spark: For long-duration spacecraft, should designers favour a chip with a longer mission target, or wait for completed qualification and flight experience before committing?
