Cohere is releasing North 2, a new version of its enterprise AI platform that lets customers build agents for more complex, multistep work. The practical change is a shift from chat and document retrieval towards agents that can act across business tasks, with controls for human oversight, access and cost.

What happened
North began as a platform for chatting with internal documents and handling some automated workflows, Cohere chief AI officer Joëlle Pineau told The Globe and Mail. She said North 2 adds features for agents to tackle tasks such as resolving customer issues, conducting financial analysis and coding. Some features have already shipped to customers.
North wraps AI models in an agent harness that manages agents and connects them to other applications. Cohere says customers can use models from other providers, design agents to take only authorised actions, require human input for more critical tasks, set limits on data access and monitor or cap usage costs. Bell Canada, LG CNS and Dell are named as customers; Pineau said Cohere has dozens of companies using North, with some reaching tens of thousands of users.

Why it matters
The pitch is not simply a more capable model. North is the layer meant to organise agents, connect them to company software and set boundaries around what they can do. Model choice and those controls may matter to organisations that want agents to work across internal systems without handing every decision to an unconstrained bot.
There is also a practical bill attached to all that autonomy: agents can spend time trying to complete tasks, and usage costs can climb. Monitoring and limits are therefore part of the product story, not decorative settings in a menu.
Our read
North 2 makes a clear play for the unglamorous middle ground between a chatbot and a dependable workplace tool. The useful test is whether customers can get agents through real, multistep jobs reliably, while keeping access, human review and costs in check. “Agentic” is easy to say; a support case resolved without a cleanup crew is the more interesting milestone.
What to watch
- Which North 2 features are generally available, and which customers are using them.
- Whether Cohere shares results on task completion, errors and human interventions.
- How customers manage agent access and costs as deployments grow.
Discussion spark: For workplace AI agents, which should be the non-negotiable: the freedom to choose any model, or tighter guarantees about what the agent can access and do?
