DeepSeek Harness has shipped its second alpha this week, and this one changes what the tool is rather than where it can reach. Version 0.1.6-alpha.2, published on 17 September, adds a full plugin system, sidebar previews of Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and default limits on how far a subagent chain can fan out. The previous alpha bolted on experimental browser and computer control. This one builds the furniture around it, and the furniture is where the trust lives.

What happened

The release notes describe a plugin manager with a dedicated page for installing and configuring plugins, with live enabling and disabling. Under the bonnet, plugin dependencies now resolve at runtime and the manager unloads plugins without a restart. The notes ask plugin developers to check their loading and unloading logic, which is the polite way of saying the contract has moved.

Creator mode has been rebuilt around the same idea: the old Cordis dynamic definition and execution tools are gone, replaced by persistent plugins installed through the manager.

The review story improves too. Conversations now end with a file change card listing what the agent touched, with file-by-file comparison in the sidebar. Submitted plans can be previewed before they run, and subagent conversations open in the sidebar instead of hiding in a log.

One line in the bug fixes deserves a second read: web user terminals run with system-user permissions, independent of the agent sandbox mode. The notes present that as intended behaviour, so anyone assuming the sidebar terminal inherits the agent's sandbox should adjust the assumption.

Our top picks

  • Plugin manager
Install, configure and toggle plugins live, with runtime dependency resolution and unloading that skips the restart.
  • File change cards
Every turn ends with a list of touched files, reviewable one by one before you accept the work.
  • Office previews
Word, Excel and PowerPoint files open in the sidebar, no export ritual required.
  • Browser-mode URLs
Send a specified URL to the sidebar and it opens in browser mode.
  • A leash for subagents
Continuable subagent chains now default to eight live children and a delegation depth of one, adjustable in settings.
  • Multi-instance sessions
Client sessions can coexist, though the related APIs and slots have changed, so read before upgrading.
  • Quicker starts
CLI and web startup waits are down, and the context meter sits in the composer footer with a click-through breakdown.

Why it matters

The plugin system is the headline because it turns Harness from a fixed workbench into a platform other people can extend. Runtime resolution and unloading are the difference between a plugin system people tinker with and one they build on.

The quieter shift is trust machinery. File change cards, plan previews and subagent limits all push the same way: show the person what the agent did before it counts as done. Capping chains at eight children and depth one is a quiet admission that unbounded agent fan-out is a cost as well as a thrill.

Our read

This is the right kind of progress. Browser and computer control win the attention, but review surfaces and resource limits decide whether anyone hands an agent a real codebase, and DeepSeek is building those first. Respect the tag, though: this is alpha, the session APIs have just shifted, and the notes explicitly ask plugin developers to recheck their logic. Hold off betting a production workflow on the plugin contract, but do try the file change cards. They are the feature most likely to save your afternoon.

What to watch

  • The plugin ecosystem
Whether third-party plugins arrive in numbers, and whether a registry or quality bar emerges.
  • The road out of alpha
How quickly the session and plugin APIs settle, and what breaks along the way.
  • The subagent defaults
Whether eight children and depth one become a template other agent frameworks copy.
  • The model list
V4 Flash and V4 Flash Vision Exp have left the defaults, which may signal a refresh.

Discussion spark: Plugin platforms live or die on third-party uptake: would you build against DeepSeek Harness's plugin manager while the tag still reads alpha, or is that a bet you only place once the API stops moving?
