DeepSeek is reportedly preparing for a possible stock-market debut and has chosen a dealmaker as its first chief financial officer. Reuters says Yan Wentao is expected to help the Chinese AI startup build the financial controls, investor communications and disclosure machinery that a listing demands.

DeepSeek Watch analysis

What happened

Two people familiar with the matter told Reuters that DeepSeek plans to appoint Yan, a partner at GL Ventures. The report says DeepSeek has also hired CITIC Securities to prepare for a possible listing on Shanghai's technology-focused STAR Market.

The appointment has not been publicly confirmed. DeepSeek, Hillhouse Investment and Yan did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Reuters also reports that DeepSeek is raising capital, investing in computing infrastructure, chip development and talent, and was valued at about 500 billion yuan in an earlier reported fundraising round.

The numbers

  • Possible STAR Market listing
CITIC Securities is reportedly preparing DeepSeek for a potential Shanghai listing, but no flotation has been announced.
  • Reported valuation
Reuters previously reported an ongoing fundraising round valuing DeepSeek at about 500 billion yuan, or roughly $74 billion.
  • Earlier capital raise
DeepSeek reportedly raised about $7.4 billion in June at a post-money valuation above $50 billion.
  • A new corporate phase
A first CFO would mark a shift from founder-funded research lab towards a more conventional company built for investors and disclosure.

Why it matters

DeepSeek became famous for low-cost AI models. Now the interesting question is whether its corporate structure can scale as quickly as its technical reputation. A CFO with dealmaking experience would give the company a dedicated operator for fundraising, financial controls and the awkward choreography of becoming investable at enormous scale.

It also shows how the AI race is moving beyond model releases. Compute, chips, talent and capital are becoming part of the same competitive system, with DeepSeek apparently building all four at once.

Our read

This is a meaningful sign of maturation, but still a reported appointment and a possible listing, not an IPO timetable. Watch the filings, the confirmed hire and whether DeepSeek's next funding round changes who controls the company.

What to watch

  • Whether DeepSeek publicly confirms Yan Wentao's appointment.
  • Any formal STAR Market filing or timetable.
  • The terms and investors in DeepSeek's reported fundraising round.
  • Further spending on chips, computing infrastructure and recruitment.

Discussion spark: Would a public listing strengthen DeepSeek's ability to build AI infrastructure, or dilute the founder-led model that got it this far?
