Devin Fusion splits coding work between a planner and an executor

Cognition has expanded Devin Fusion across Devin Desktop and CLI, pairing a frontier-class planning model with a cheaper model that executes the work. The important idea is not merely “two models good”: each keeps its own context, so planning can continue while code is being written. Cognition says the arrangement improves efficiency by up to 39% and can cut costs by 46% under specified benchmark conditions. Those are company figures rather than independent findings, but they turn multi-model routing into a concrete engineering and purchasing proposition.

What happened

Fusion assigns strategy and reasoning to a lead model while a “sidekick” handles execution. The two run in parallel with separate persistent contexts, and the agent can route work between them during a session. Cognition recommends Claude Fable 5.1 as the lead with SWE-2 as the sidekick, while also supporting GPT-6 Astra pairings.

The feature was previewed on 29 June and expanded to Devin Desktop and CLI on 11 September, according to Crypto Briefing’s report. Cognition says 88% of merged pull requests from its own engineering team were processed successfully through Fusion’s automated routing.

Why it matters

Most coding-agent comparisons ask which single model is best. Fusion asks a more useful operational question: which parts of software work actually need the expensive model? If the planner can preserve intent while a cheaper executor handles implementation, teams may get more autonomous work from the same budget.

The trade-off is coordination. A clever plan can still become shabby code if hand-offs lose constraints, tests or context. Aggregate efficiency figures will matter less than whether teams can inspect those hand-offs and catch failures before the agent opens a triumphant pull request.

Our read

Fusion is a sensible architecture with an unusually legible economic pitch. Teams already using Devin should test it on representative repositories, tracking total cost, review time, test failures and rework against a single-model baseline. The company’s headline percentages are interesting; your own merged code is the sterner examiner.

What to watch

  • Independent reproduction of Cognition’s cost and benchmark claims.
  • Whether model hand-offs increase review work or subtle implementation errors.
  • Support for more lead-and-sidekick combinations and user-defined routing policies.
  • Better visibility into which model made each decision and wrote each change.

Discussion spark: Is splitting planning from execution the right architecture for coding agents, or does it make failures harder to trace?
