Flai has raised $27 million to expand AI software that handles customer conversations for car dealerships. The startup says its system now books 50,000 appointments a month, a sign that dealership AI is moving beyond answering the phone.

What happened

TechCrunch reports that Flai’s Series A was led by Base10 Partners, with participation from dealer groups, Toyota’s venture arm, Y Combinator and First Round Capital. The company says it works with more than 10 of the top 50 US dealer groups.

Flai’s software responds to calls, emails and texts, runs outbound campaigns, and schedules sales and service appointments. CEO Ari Polakof told TechCrunch the company’s revenue has grown twentyfold. That figure is his account, not an independently audited result.

The company says a dealership can go live about 10 days after signing a contract. One example in the report is a luxury dealer in Puerto Rico, where customers may switch between Spanish and English mid-conversation; Flai’s co-founder said the product was introduced for service calls before expanding to sales across the group’s eight stores.

Why it matters

The pitch is not simply a chatbot picking up the phone. Flai is trying to handle the follow-up and appointment work around a customer enquiry, while flagging conversations that may need a person’s attention. That puts AI into a dealership’s day-to-day customer operations, where a missed call can mean a missed sale or service booking.

The reported appointment volume and funding suggest investors and dealer groups see room for specialised tools built around one industry’s workflows. They do not, on their own, show whether customers are happier or dealerships are making more money.

Our read

This is a useful test of where narrow AI products can beat general-purpose business software: not by being clever everywhere, but by fitting the details of one job. The next proof point is whether those bookings translate into better service and durable returns for dealers, rather than a very efficient way to fill a calendar.

What to watch

  • Whether Flai adds more dealer groups and expands within existing customers.
  • How the software handles complex or unhappy customer conversations, and when it hands them to staff.
  • Whether the reported appointment volume leads to measurable gains for dealerships.

Discussion spark: Should dealerships let AI handle customer calls and bookings by default, or should customers be told clearly when they are speaking with an automated system?
