IBM has sold contracts for “hundreds” of its VMware cloud customers to 11:11 Systems, according to The Register. The deal gives those customers a new service provider as Broadcom’s shrinking VMware partner network puts long-term cloud arrangements under pressure.

Watch Desk analysis

What happened

11:11 Systems told The Register it bought contracts covering customers running VMware Cloud Foundation versions 7 and 8 in IBM’s cloud. Its CEO, Brett Diamond, said the company plans to use its migration method with the new customers and hopes they will stay with VMware. IBM did not respond to The Register’s questions, which included a question about customers understood not to be moving to 11:11.

The report says Broadcom ended the right of excluded partners to resell VMware software in October 2025, and those partners may not be able to run VMware-powered clouds after March 2027. The Register says VMware support for VCF 8 ends next year, giving customers another reason to plan a move. Read The Register’s report.

Why it matters

For customers, a sale of service contracts can mean a change in who manages their VMware cloud, even if the aim is to keep operations steady. The immediate questions are how each customer’s migration will work and what happens to customers not moving to 11:11.

This also shows the practical consequences of Broadcom’s partner strategy: service providers are reshaping where their customers’ VMware workloads will sit, while customers face choices about staying with VMware or moving elsewhere. The Register’s account does not establish that IBM’s customers have all agreed to the transfer or that every migration will be seamless.

Our read

“Hundreds” is a sizeable handover, but the number alone does not tell customers what changes on Monday morning. The useful test will be whether 11:11 can make the transition predictable, and whether IBM clarifies the arrangements for customers not going with the buyer. In enterprise IT, “non-disruptive” is an aspiration that deserves a timetable and a contact number.

What to watch

  • How 11:11 handles migrations for customers on VCF 7 and 8.
  • What IBM says about customers not transferring to 11:11.
  • How Broadcom’s partner changes affect customers’ options before the reported March 2027 cutoff.

Discussion spark: Should enterprise customers prioritise staying with a familiar platform during a provider handover, or use the disruption as a reason to move to a different hypervisor?
