Meta and Sierra have announced an open standard for personal AI agents interacting with businesses, with authentication and consumer control at its centre. The plan brings a notable group of commerce and technology companies together, but the announcement does not yet set out a technical specification or delivery timetable.

Watch Desk analysis

What happened

The Personal Agent Protocol is intended to define how personal AI agents interact with businesses across websites, APIs and companies’ own agents. Its announced partners include Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart.

The protocol’s stated aims include handling authentication, empowering consumers and giving companies visibility and control over agents’ activity. Its organisers also say it is designed to support future communication between agents. The announcement comes from Sierra, which says it is partnering with Meta to introduce the standard.

Why it matters

If agents are to book, buy or manage services for people, businesses need a way to recognise them and set limits on what they can do. A shared protocol could make those interactions work across different services instead of leaving every business to invent its own arrangement.

The consumer-control promise is the part to keep an eye on. Company visibility and control matter too, but a standard for agent commerce will only earn trust if people can understand what an agent is authorised to do and retain meaningful say over it.

Our read

This is a substantive attempt to set common ground for AI-assisted commerce, backed by companies with a stake in making it happen. That makes it worth watching, not yet worth treating as a working standard: the announcement gives goals, but not the technical detail needed to judge how permissions or accountability will operate.

What to watch

  • Whether the partners publish a technical specification and implementation timetable.
  • How authentication and consumer permissions work across different businesses.
  • What visibility companies receive, and what records people can access about an agent’s actions.

Discussion spark: Should an open standard for AI-agent shopping prioritise giving people control over each action, or making transactions work smoothly across businesses?
