Meta says more than one million businesses are using AI agents on WhatsApp and Messenger, and points to a car-rental example where an agent handled bookings from vehicle choice through payment. The claim puts a practical question behind the talk of AI transforming business: are these tools already taking on customer-facing work, or are the headline numbers doing some heavy lifting?

Meta AI Watch analysis

What happened

A Meta vice-president’s commentary in Fortune says Brazilian car-rental company Movida used Meta Business Agent to bring its booking journey into WhatsApp. The executive says daily bookings rose 44% in one month and 85% of conversations were resolved entirely by the agent. Those are Meta’s figures, presented in an opinion piece, not independently established results.

The commentary also says more than one million businesses are already using AI agents on WhatsApp and Messenger. It argues that agents could give smaller businesses access to customer-service and personalisation tools once largely available to bigger firms.

Why it matters

This is a concrete example of agentic AI being pitched not just as an office assistant, but as a front door to buying something. If customers can choose a vehicle, see pricing and pay in one chat, the agent is part of the sales operation, not merely a quicker way to find a link.

The promise is appealing; the figures need context. A rise in bookings over one month does not tell us what caused it, and a high resolution rate does not tell us whether customers were satisfied or what happened when the agent could not help.

Our read

The interesting shift is where the agent sits: between a business and its customers, with the potential to move a transaction along rather than simply answer a question. Meta’s example is worth watching, but one company’s reported results are a starting point for scrutiny, not a universal business case. The useful next measure is whether customers complete tasks reliably, and whether businesses can see when the agent gets them wrong.

What to watch

  • Whether Meta provides more detail on how it counts businesses using AI agents.
  • Whether Movida or Meta shares the booking figures’ baseline and measurement period.
  • How often customers need human help to finish an agent-led purchase.

Discussion spark: Should businesses let AI agents handle a customer’s full purchase, or should a human have to approve the transaction before payment?
