Microsoft is changing its Microsoft 365 Family and Premium plans so Copilot benefits can be shared with up to five other people. The trade-off is a shift from 1TB of OneDrive storage per person to 2TB shared across the plan, with that storage change due after a subscriber’s first renewal after 2 May 2027.

What happened
The Verge reports that an email from Microsoft to subscribers sets out the coming changes. Each plan member will be able to use Copilot and the plan’s AI features, and account holders will be able to manage AI access for younger family members.
Microsoft is also moving from separate individual AI feature limits to a shared allowance that members can use across advanced AI features. Subscribers will be able to buy more AI usage when needed. The storage change keeps each person’s files and account private, but replaces the existing 1TB-per-person allowance with 2TB for the whole plan. Microsoft says eligible subscribers in some markets might qualify for transitional bonus storage.
Why it matters
This changes the practical value of a family subscription, not just the wording on a plan page. People who could not previously share the AI benefits will gain access, while families that use more than 2TB in total may have to manage their storage or consider paying for more. A large household could find the shared pool tighter than the old per-person allowances, even as another household gains useful headroom from unused space.
The new shared AI allowance also means members will draw on a common pool rather than each having a separate limit. The report does not specify the allowance’s size, so subscribers cannot yet work out how much Copilot use the plan will cover or whether extra usage will be worth buying.
Our read
Sharing Copilot across a family plan is a meaningful improvement for people who were paying for access that only the main account holder could use. But the storage change is not a small footnote: 2TB shared is less total capacity than six separate 1TB allowances. Families should check their actual usage before renewal rather than assuming “shared” automatically means “more”.
What to watch
- When Microsoft will begin rolling out the Copilot and shared-usage changes.
- The size of the shared AI allowance and the price of buying more usage.
- Which markets qualify for transitional storage and how much extra space they receive.
- How subscribers with more than 2TB in use will be affected after their first renewal following 2 May 2027.
Discussion spark: Is sharing Copilot worth it if a family may have less total OneDrive storage?
