Microsoft is adding a way for Copilot users to create and edit Office documents from the Copilot app, while removing its AI-generated Outlook themes. The new document feature is rolling out to Frontier customers using Chat and Cowork; the theme change leaves current users with a one-way exit.

Microsoft AI Watch analysis

What happened

The Register reports that a user can prompt Copilot to create an Office document, such as a Word file, then edit it in the relevant Office app while keeping the Copilot conversation open. The document can also be shared with other people, who can use Copilot prompts to make changes. The feature relies on OneDrive, the report notes, and is limited to Frontier customers in Chat and Cowork during the rollout.

Microsoft is also retiring Themes by Copilot in Outlook. According to a Message Center notice cited by The Register, the option will be removed from Settings. Anyone already using a Copilot theme can keep it, but after switching to another theme they will not be able to select or restore the Copilot one.

Why it matters

The document workflow puts Copilot beside the Office file it helps create, rather than leaving the work in a chat window. Sharing and continued prompting could make that useful for collaborative drafts, though the current rollout is restricted and the OneDrive requirement may matter to organisations built around other storage arrangements.

The Outlook change is a reminder that AI features can disappear as well as arrive. For users and IT teams, that makes availability and continuity part of the product decision, not decorative footnotes.

Our read

One Copilot feature is gaining a more practical home in Office; another is heading for the exit before it has had two years to settle in. The document workflow sounds useful, but Microsoft will need to make its storage and rollout limits clear. Perhaps do not build the company’s entire visual identity around an Outlook theme just yet.

What to watch

  • Whether document creation expands beyond Frontier customers using Chat and Cowork.
  • Whether Microsoft adds support for storage beyond OneDrive.
  • When Themes by Copilot disappears from Settings, and what replacement options remain.

Discussion spark: Should Microsoft focus on making Copilot features dependable for the long term, or is it reasonable to retire low-use extras quickly even when customers have adopted them?
