Nationwide rebuilds its banking data stack for an agentic AI push

Nationwide has moved 15 million customers off legacy core systems and consolidated 19 data stores on Microsoft Azure, creating the foundation for AI tools across the UK building society. The important bit is the order: fix the data plumbing first, then give thousands of employees and emerging agents somewhere trustworthy to work.

Watch Desk analysis

What happened

Nationwide says it has replaced a 45-year-old customer data platform with a cloud-based environment built on Azure and Azure Databricks. It is also preparing to integrate five million Virgin Money accounts following the acquisition, while combining structured records with documents and notes for use by AI systems.

The Technology Magazine profile describes several deployments already under way. An internal tool called Talk to Data lets around 80 senior executives query enterprise information in natural language. Roughly 2,500 engineers use GitHub Copilot and Azure OpenAI, while the 1,000-person finance team uses Microsoft 365 Copilot for drafting, meeting summaries and action extraction.

Why it matters

This is a useful counterexample to the familiar enterprise strategy of buying an AI assistant and hoping organisational wisdom spontaneously condenses around it. Nationwide is tying its tools to a consolidated data layer, identifiable jobs and adoption figures.

The harder phase begins with specialised agents. Drafting a meeting summary is one thing; supporting mortgage advice or customer due diligence puts data quality, permissions and accountability directly in the workflow. Readers can now distinguish the live deployments from the roadmap: Copilot and Talk to Data are already in use, while the domain agents remain under development.

Our read

Nationwide has chosen the right sequence. Modernise the core, unify the data, test tools with bounded groups, then attempt more consequential automation. It is not glamorous, but neither is discovering that your shiny agent has confidently consulted the wrong one of 19 databases.

The next proof should be outcome data. Usage rates show that staff are opening the tools; Nationwide should now publish whether they improve turnaround times, accuracy and customer service without weakening oversight in regulated decisions.

What to watch

  • Whether the five million Virgin Money accounts move onto the shared environment smoothly.
  • Measured productivity and quality results from the engineering and finance deployments.
  • How Nationwide limits and reviews agents used in mortgage, due-diligence and anti-money-laundering work.
  • Whether Talk to Data expands beyond its initial group of around 80 executives.

Discussion spark: Which evidence should Nationwide publish before its specialised agents are trusted with mortgage advice or customer due diligence?
