Sainsbury’s has added SmartLists to its shopping app, letting customers type a shopping list or photograph a handwritten one and turn it into a basket of products, including Nectar Prices. The practical bet is that a quicker list also makes Sainsbury’s offers the first ones shoppers see.

What happened
SmartLists maps entries to products in Sainsbury’s range, with options and loyalty prices shown so shoppers can keep an eye on their budget. A separate product finder is also available for use in store, and the retailer has combined SmartShop and other services in a single app carrying its “S” logo.
Resultsense says the launch was reported by DecisionMarketing and Grocery Gazette. The reporting describes typed and photographed lists; although Sainsbury’s product director Ben Edge mentioned speaking, it does not establish that voice input is available.
Why it matters
This puts AI close to a decision shoppers make every week: what goes in the basket, and at what price. Matching a loose request such as ingredients for spaghetti bolognese to actual products could save the tedious business of adding items one by one.
It also gives the retailer a prominent place to present its own products and Nectar offers. The reports do not explain how the matching works or how often it chooses the wrong item, so accuracy and clear alternatives will matter as much as the time saved.
Our read
SmartLists is a useful, tangible application of AI, not a chatbot looking for a job. But a list that saves taps while steering someone to the wrong size, product or price has not really saved them much. Shoppers should check what the app has matched before ordering, at least until it earns their trust.
What to watch
- Whether SmartLists reliably matches vague requests and handwritten notes to the intended products.
- How clearly it presents alternatives and Nectar Prices.
- Whether voice input becomes available; the supplied reporting does not establish that it is live.
Discussion spark: Should a supermarket’s AI list suggest the best match across its range, or is it fair for Nectar offers and the retailer’s own products to get first dibs?
