Shopify has introduced Canvas, an early store-building tool that lets merchants describe changes to its Sidekick AI and see them appear on a live-rendered store. The promise is a more visual route from instruction to working storefront, though Canvas is desktop-only and still lacks support for several important Shopify features.

What happened
The AI Insider reports that Canvas lets merchants view a whole store or zoom in on details as Sidekick makes changes. Shopify says the display renders the store’s actual code, rather than a static preview, so merchants can test layouts, animations and interactivity across screen sizes. Sidekick also takes screenshots of its work, and users can still select individual elements to edit directly.
The tool is built on Sidekick’s direct access to theme files, alongside a simplified theme architecture designed to help the AI understand and modify a store’s structure, logic and design. Read The AI Insider’s report.
Why it matters
Canvas aims to make storefront customisation less dependent on dragging theme blocks around or calling in a developer for code changes. Seeing edits rendered on the actual store could make it easier for merchants to judge whether a requested change works in practice, not merely whether a mock-up looks convincing.
But this is an early tool, not a magic wand for every Shopify setup. The report says Canvas does not yet support third-party themes, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts or theme updates. Those gaps could matter more than the chat interface for merchants with complex stores.
Our read
The interesting move is giving an AI agent access to the files and structure that shape a working storefront, then letting the merchant inspect the result visually. That is a more useful test of AI-assisted design than another impressive-looking preview. For now, merchants should treat Canvas as an early option to explore, not assume it can handle a customised store end to end. “Just tell the AI what you want” is a lovely pitch; compatibility is where the less glamorous work lives.
What to watch
- Whether Shopify adds support for third-party themes and app blocks.
- How well Canvas handles more complex stores and theme changes.
- Whether merchants can reliably inspect and correct the code changes Sidekick makes.
Discussion spark: Would you trust an AI assistant to edit the code behind your live shop if you could inspect the changes as they appeared, or would you still want a developer in the loop?
