Torch Systems has raised $11.5 million to expand its AI-powered monitoring of outdoor infrastructure, from solar sites to transmission corridors. Its solar-powered TerraNode devices combine cameras and environmental sensors with on-device AI to flag changes such as fires, overheating equipment and intrusions.

What happened
The funding comprises $9.5 million in equity and $2 million in venture debt, according to Torch’s announcement, carried by The AI Insider. The company says it has hundreds of devices deployed across six US states and plans to scale manufacturing and deployment into the thousands.
Each TerraNode combines optical and thermal cameras with acoustic, gas, air-quality and environmental sensors. Torch says its platform learns normal patterns at individual sites, flags deviations and can correlate events across multiple devices. Dominion Energy is among the named customers, using the system at solar sites to monitor for issues including fire risk, panel misalignment, overheating and vegetation growth.
Why it matters
The pitch is to monitor places where conventional systems can be costly or difficult to install because they need wired power, network connections or separate tools for separate risks. Torch says its devices need no external power or wired network connection and can be installed in minutes.
That makes this more than another camera with an AI label: the product combines several kinds of sensing, local processing and site-specific pattern tracking. The company says its devices have detected fires and other operational issues, but its announcement does not provide independent performance data or detection rates.
Our read
A single device that can watch for several kinds of trouble in remote locations is a useful idea, particularly if it helps operators direct attention to the sites that need it. The real test is whether those alerts are timely and reliable enough to earn a place in operational routines. “It spotted something” is a start; knowing how often it spots the right thing is the more useful number.
What to watch
- Whether Torch shares detection rates, false-alarm figures or other performance data.
- How quickly the company moves from hundreds of devices to the thousands it plans to deploy.
- Whether deployments expand beyond fire and solar-site monitoring into other infrastructure uses.
Discussion spark: For remote infrastructure, would you trust one multi-sensor AI system to flag several kinds of risk, or prefer separate tools for each job?
