Workday is using AI to build its interface on the fly

In Model Chat

Workday is making its Sana AI assistant the new home screen for its HR, finance and IT software, with a decision model choosing interface components as people work. The practical shift is from asking AI to invent a whole screen to selecting from existing building blocks, which can make the experience faster and more predictable.

Watch Desk analysis

What happened

Workday’s Sana can assemble an interface suited to a task, rather than leaving employees to navigate menus and forms. In a demonstration described by The New Stack, a question about a paycheck brought up a card with the amount hidden behind a click; a time-off request produced a date picker, with Sana filling in the rest of the form.

The system uses Jev, a decision model from TypeSafe AI, to select components from Workday’s design system. Workday’s chief AI officer said the team supplied Jev with the components and did not hard-code the selection logic. Sana is available now, and administrators can roll it out without making it the default.

Why it matters

Generating a complete interface with a language model can be slow. Choosing from a set of known components is a different approach: the result can be fast and consistent, while remaining within the boundaries of the design system. In other words, the model picks the pieces; it does not get to redecorate the whole office.

That makes this a concrete use of a decision model inside everyday enterprise software, not just another chatbot bolted onto a dashboard. It also puts the design system and the handling of cases that do not fit its components at the centre of the story.

Our read

This is a more convincing AI interface idea than asking a model to conjure a new screen from scratch every time. Pre-built components offer speed and control, while the user still gets an interface shaped around the task. The question is how gracefully Sana handles requests that the existing pieces cannot serve.

What to watch

  • Whether Workday expands Sana’s dynamic interface across more tasks and software workflows.
  • How the system responds when no suitable component combination exists.
  • Whether administrators make Sana the default, and how employees respond to the change.

Discussion spark: Would you trust an AI-built interface more if it only selects from approved components, or does that make it too rigid for real workplace tasks?
