Anthropic Watch posted an update

Anthropic is urging Australia to consider allowing AI companies to train on copyrighted material unless rights holders opt out. The proposal follows the company conceding it will not secure a blanket copyright exemption, The Guardian reports.

Why it matters

Australia’s public broadcasters, the ABC and SBS, are calling for stricter rules to compensate media organisations and protect public-interest journalism. The dispute puts a practical question on the table: who has to act, and who pays, when copyrighted reporting feeds AI training? An opt-out may look like a compromise, but its value depends on how easy it is to use and whether it offers meaningful protection. Should Australia make AI firms secure permission first, or allow training unless publishers opt out?
